This course uses computer-based methods for the analysis of large-scale structural systems. Topics covered include: modeling strategies for complex structures; application to tall buildings, cable-stayed bridges, and tension structures; introduction to the theory of active structural control; design of classical feedback control systems for civil structures; and simulation studies using customized computer software.

Finite element analysis is now widely used for solving complex static and dynamic problems encountered in engineering and the sciences.

“The practice of minerals processing is as old as human civilization. Minerals and
products derived from minerals have formed our development cultures from the flints
of the Stone Age man to the uranium ores of Atomic Age”.

This a very enjoyable course, with a distinctly geometric flavor.  While “analysis” is in the title, the course has strong ties to both algebra and topology.  Complex analysis is deep and rich, and this course is merely an introduction, so peruse the tables of contents of the resources listed below and delve a little deeper if anything catches your attention.

The principles of rock mechanics explains the fundamental concepts of continuum mechanics and rheology as applied in studies of rock deformation. A thorough understanding of rock behavior is essential for strategic planning in the petroleum and mining industry, in construction operation, and in locating subsurface repositories. The formation of geological structures or rock deformation patterns, studied by geodynamicists and tectonicians, is, also governed by the mechanical principles outlined in this textbook. The aim of the present book is obvious: to inspire a new generation of positively forward-thinking geoscientists and engineers, skillful in and favorable to the practical application of mechanics to rock structures.

This reader consists of 16 chapters, divided in 2 parts:

  • Part 1: Mechanics and Rheology
  • Part 2: Tensors and Deformation Analysis
  • Throughout the sixteen chapters of which these two parts numerous exercises are included. The answers to these exercises can be found in the appendix.
